Holidays

Presentation

In 2000 the VML Society decided to propose and arrange Family Holiday in order to help the consequences of the Disease.

For this project, the actions of the VML Society are as follows:

- Taking responsibility for the whole management of the holiday e.g. looking for an ideal location with facilities for disabled people and liaising with the holiday staff at these centres; listing names of patients who will be participating in this three day holiday.
- Enrolment of a team to accompany and ensure a top quality service for the disabled children. Depending on the wishes of the parents, children will be cared for either day or night on a twenty four hour basis.
- Making contacts with the Specialists and Physiotherapists at the closest hospitals to the holiday location to ensure a continuous or an emergency care for the children.
- Facilitating participation through partial funding of the family holiday. This financial help depends on the family income.
- General funding of the holiday.

Aim of the project

The Holiday gives the following opportunities:

- Facilitating holiday participation that would be difficult to arrange without support, given the nature and constraints of the disease.
- Giving a chance to relax to the parents who provide intensive care to their children all year round.
- Giving the opportunity to each member of the family, including parents and siblings, to spend quality time together.
- Giving a chance to the patients to participate in community life.

The project is for families having one or two children with Lysosomal storage disorders whose health requires permanent intensive care and follow up.
